Anyone who follows @HonestNFL knows it is a rare place on social media where you can find legit football. The Honest NFL bunch concepts is just the most recent example that we are providing for you.
Before you watch this short video, let me talk about the definition of “Bunch”. Here at FirstDown PlayBook, I can say that I learned more about bunch formations the one year that I sat in on defensive meetings at the Chicago Bears than I did when I coached on offense the other 8 years.
Sitting in on Lovie Smith’s, Vance Bedford’s and Ron Rivera’s defensive meetings, I was surprised to see what they considered to be a “Bunch” formation. I always had looked at bunch as three receivers on or near the line of scrimmage. This formation gave you the ability to create rubs and picks.
If The Defense Thinks It is A Bunch Formation, Than It Is
I quickly learned that any time three players got in close proximity to one another this was a bunch. It could be a 2×2 formation but if that one back and the two receivers were close enough to create a rub then you were going to make a “BUNCH ALERT!” call. This was increasingly important as offenses got into the red zone.
It made sense in so many ways. When you take into consideration how smart NFL offensive coordinators are at using shifts and motions to create bunch formations, defenses have to always identify what could happen at the snap. So as you look at this latest FirstDown PlayBook install, keep this in mind.
