Run Game Toss Crack Counter Package

By FirstDown PlayBook on Sep 7, 2023

After you begin to get your base football run game down, at some point you may want to package your football plays. Today we are going to look at one of our favorite ways to do this. Packaging the Toss Crack and the Counter out of Bunch formation is a great way to do this. It can put a defense in a bind at any level of football

First, let’s explain “packaging plays”. Simply put this is when you have two plays. You run the one that looks best against the defense that is played. Of course, this could be a run pass combination. However, for the sake of this blog, we will look at two packaged runs.

When you line up in Bunch formation you are almost certainly going to get a middle of the field closed defense. The defense will be looking to stop the run game first. This is true even if you form the bunch with three receivers. The numbers and the leverage convince most defensive coordinators to roll coverage to that side or have a quarters safety ready to insert as part of the box.

This Toss Crack Counter Package Is Good If You Don’t Have A Strong Passing Game

Some offensive coordinators are quick to go to their passing game when this happens. However, you might not have the luxury of having a “go to” quarterback. This is when this Toss Crack Counter package comes in handy. It allows you to keep the ball on the ground and still have a good answer. Packaging plays can also be handled by the play caller at the youth football level.

This video touches on another answer to a defense that rolls up to your Bunch formation and also starts to cheat the linebackers over strong. The big difference is that this answer keeps the ball on the ground. FirstDown PlayBook has always liked packaging the Toss Crack with the weak side counter play because of how easy it is for the quarterback.

This package gives the quarterback something simple to look at for a “Check With Me” at the line of scrimmage or sometimes the coordinator can just call both plays individually and let it ride. Watch this short video to get more details on how we coach this run game package.
