Youth Football Power I Counter

By FirstDown PlayBook on Aug 10, 2025

One of the hardest things to do as a youth football coach is to package youth football plays. The reasons are fairly obvious. It’s hard enough to get 8 year olds to run one play correctly, much less multiple plays that look like one another. However, there are some Pop Warner formations that lend themselves to this more than others. FirstDown PlayBook puts this Power I Counter in that category.

The FirstDown PlayBook Youth Football Power I is one of 12 different Pop Warner formations that we offer youth football coaches. So why do we like it so much for this counter run? Let’s take a look.

The FirstDown PlayBook Youth Football Power I Allows You To Play Four Backs

You wouldn’t think that keeping your personnel happy would be that important at the youth football level and it probably shouldn’t be. However, kids and their parents want their kid top touch the ball and this Power I formation allows it to happen.

Four youth football backs also gives you other counter run plays other than the one that FirstDown PlayBook is highlighting today. Today’s play still has your tailback carrying the ball. However; anytime you can fake it to your best runner and hand off to another running back, that is another great way to run a football counter.

Mark It Down. The Defense Will Cheat To The Strong Side Vs This Formation

Any good defensive coordinator is going to draw a line right down the middle of an offense’s Center and start counting players. If you do that with this formation you will understand that there are eight players to the strong side of the Power I formation. The offense can run a sweep, a power, a dive and even an option to the strong side.

The defense will cheat their alignment and their focus to stop the strong side run game. Pop Warner aged linebackers will normally key the backfield too. This is why with this run play everything starts to the strong side before countering back to the weak side.

Having One Wideout Allows You To Still Threaten The Defense With The Passing Game

The best youth football coaches are the ones who are realistic about their passing game. Eight and nine year olds run better than they throw and catch. Whenever you flex a player out as a wideout you have to ask the question, “What if the defense ignores that player or cheats to the run game daring my quarterback to throw the ball?”

The FirstDown PlayBook Power I allows you to still threaten the defense with a passing game, if your quarterback can handle it. We still recommend that you are smart about the wide receiver’s split. Make it friendly for your youth football quarterback.

So take a look at this video as we whiteboard it up for you and hopefully give you one more play to run this Pop Warner season.
