FirstDown PlayBook Youth Football Play: Power I Dive Option

The #1 Tool for Youth Football & pop Warner Coaches

There is an old saying in football that goes something like “If you can’t block them, read them.” The “them” in this case is of course the defense. If you coach long enough we all get into a game where the defense is far more talented than your offense or the defense stacks the box with unblockable numbers. This shows up in youth football more than at the older levels and that’s why today we are featuring this FirstDown PlayBook Dive Option out of your Power I formation.

As many of you know by now, over the past 16 years FirstDown PlayBook has always preached simplicity when coaching Pop Warner aged players. The worst thing a youth football coach can do is to try to run an offense or play that they saw on TV.

So I want to start off by saying that if you choose to run this youth football Power I Dive Option, make sure you have simple and concise rules for your quarterback. I think that is easily achievable with this play. Essentially your young quarterback is going to read the end player on the line of scrimmage.

You will see in this short video that every player has an assignment that works versus multiple fronts or defenses. The other thing that jumps out is every player can understand their assignment with one or two concise rules that work versus any defense.

I Like This Option Play Because It’s Very Simple To Coach & Teach

You front side offensive linemen are going to use the age old rule of “Gap-On-Next Level”. Of course your exact terminology might vary a little but the blocking scheme does not. The play side Tight End is always going to leave the end player on the line of scrimmage unblocked. That is because the quarterback is going to read that player.

Now, I’m not going to coach you up on every player because we do that in this video. however; I do want to make the point that this play can be run as a double option run play or a triple option run play. Heck, it can even be run as a predetermined run to the Quarterback, Dive Back or Pitch Back. The defense won’t know any different.

The Power I Gives You Downhill Punch As Well & A Great Counter Too!

The additional reason that this is important is that option plays require a lot of reps in practice. You must be willing to dedicate a lot of practice time to run this play full speed without mistakes. That is why it’s important to note that you are actually getting several plays that all look the same to the defense.

So take a look and remember, if your Pop Warner offense has your youth football players blocking perfectly on every play…that’s not going to happen. Maybe this FirstDown PlayBook youth football Dive Option fits for your team.
