NFL Coaches On 6 Youth Football Defenses

Coaching a youth football player how to play a 3 technique on defense is arguably the most important coaching job you will have as a Pop Warner, USA Football or AYF coach working on the defensive side of the ball. Why? Because this player is responsible for defending the B gap. FirstDown PlayBook knows every offense has a B gap attack. It is normally the offense’s primary point of attack.

Coaching a youth football player how to play a 3 technique is arguably the most important coaching job you will have as a Pop Warner coach working on the defensive side of the ball. Why? Because this player is responsible for defending the B gap. Every offense has a B gap attack. It is normally the offense’s primary point of attack.

It might be a Duo blocking scheme or it might be a power attack with guards pulling. Even bad youth football offenses will try to attack you in the B gap. For this reason, it is important that, as a Pop Warner or USA Football coach, you play one of your better players at this spot.

We Would Argue That This Is The Most Important Youth Football Defensive Position

As we mention in the video below, we have already covered several other youth football defensive line techniques. We have detailed a zero nose, a shaded nose and a 2 technique. However, let’s face it. The further you move outside from the Center, the more athletic the youth football offensive linemen will be.

Your youth football 3 technique will face a combination of athleticism and power as they defend the B gap. An A gap player essentially plays against a Center who has the football between their legs and a Guard. Your youth football 3 technique will play between an athletic Tackle and a Guard who can likely pull very well.

How you coach this player will be critical. Understanding what the blocking schemes are trying to do is a good first step. We cover most, if not all of them in the video below. A good AYF Football or USA Football coach will coach this important position just as hard as they would their quarterback.

Take a look at this video and also check out the other youth football defensive line videos too. You will be glad when you line up your youth football team in a month or two.
