Youth Football Nose Guard Technique

FirstDown PlayBook is pretty fired up about this one for several reasons. The first and foremost reason is that we love teaching football. The second reason is that every spring we try to get out front of our youth football coaching and teaching. This spring we are going to take a deep dive into coaching a Pop Warner aged youth football defensive line. Today we start with coaching the 0 Nose.
If you follow our FirstDown PlayBook Coaches Community site you know we announced last week that we are going to cover every youth football defensive line technique. By that, we mean from a 0 Nose to a 9 technique.
In our opinion the hardest Pop Warner youth football positions to coach are the offensive line and the defensive line. The reason is simple. Those are the two positions you are asking young players to get in a 3 or 4 point stance and stay low the entire play. They are the essence of Belichick’s “Do your job”.
It Is Only Fitting That We Start With The Hardest Youth Football Defensive Line Technique
No offense to the youth football offensive line, but at least they have been coached (hopefully) on who to block. A youth football defensive lineman must read the hat of the offensive lineman over them and react to what happens.

If you are coaching a dominant youth football defensive lineman, this may not apply to you. I have a house cat who could do that. This is not for you “get in the gap and explode up field.” coaches. That is not coaching. Most of you will need to help your your young defensive linemen by teaching alignment, assignment and technique. That’s what this is.
So let’s get started with the youth football 0 technique. It is the hardest technique to play as a youth football defensive lineman. However, if you teach your young Pop Warner player what to read and what to feel once the ball is snapped, you will give them a chance to be successful.
If you like to play a shaded nose, stay tuned. That is coming at you in the next few days.
