FirstDown PlayBook Youth Football 2 Technique

By FirstDown PlayBook on Jun 6, 2025

The questions are obvious and relevant. Why should I have my youth football Nose Guard or Nose Tackle play a 2 technique? FirstDown PlayBook covers all of this in the video below. There are reasons to move your nose guard over the Guard instead of the Center but that should be well thought out.

We will take you through three specific reasons here and let you watch the video to learn how to teach the youth football 2 technique and to see your coaching points. Let’s look at a few reasons to consider playing a 2 technique.

1. What Gap Are You Actually Defending?

Sometimes we hear from youth football coaches who get a little too caught up in the player they are lining their defensive lineman across from. This is important but not as important as what gap you are trying to defend. Regardless of if you line your nose up in a shade or a 2 technique, you are defending the A gap. Playing a 2 technique is just an alternative way to get this done.

2. A Leverage Advantage

Defending the A gap still does not entirely answer the question of why play a 2 technique. Even if I am defending the A gap, a good reason may be to get your defensive player a little closer to where the offense is hurting you.

Stay Away From These 4 Youth Football Offenses

If the offense is hitting you on the perimeter, it just makes sense to widen your Nose to 2 technique. Now the play side Guard has a tougher job blocking down on your 2 technique. A Center who is reaching your shaded Nose on some youth football plays will find this nearly impossible vs a 2 technique.

3. Personnel Advantage

We mentioned this earlier. Sometimes you want to be smart about who you line up on who. This gets made to be a bigger deal when it is a receiver vs a defensive back. However; it is every bit as important when you talk about your defensive linemen.

Lining your nose up in 2 technique might be just the advantage they need to get them away from that talented center you are playing against. Depending on the age level, you may be able to line your Nose up in a 2 technique and still let them look inside to read the Center.
