Difference In Gun Wing T & Flank? Nothing.

By FirstDown PlayBook on Mar 18, 2022

The Flank formation has been in FirstDown PlayBook since day one. Day one was over ten years ago for those of you who are keeping track. We have always loved Flank formation. Anytime you can set two tight ends in a wing set and have two receivers on the other side, it causes defenses problems.

The FirstDown PlayBook Flank formation and the Gun Wing T are the exact same formations. The difference is what the offensive schemes are that you run from each of them. Even when you look at this though, there are very similar characteristics. Here’s what we mean.

When you line up on offense one of the first things the defense is looking for is your personnel grouping. As soon as you hit the field with 12 or 21 personnel the defensive coordinator is well aware that you are now a threat to run the ball and you have several key formations you can do it from.

Pistol Wing T?

The FirstDown PlayBook Flank formation presents a defensive coordinator with a unique dilemma as it forces him to defend a wing side and a two receiver side with skilled athletes out in space. The same is true with the Gun Wing T. Even if the DC decides to close the middle of the field he has to think twice about which way to roll the coverage.

This makes defensive coordinators think twice before rolling up to your wing side and leaving themselves a man short to the passing game threat on the two receiver side. Pair your wing running game up with the bubble to the slot receivers and a defense can get stretched thin very quickly. This is often seen in the form of an RPO where the quarterback is reading the weak side linebacker.

The Difference In Flank & The Wing T is What You Run From The Formations

The difference in Flank and Gun Wing T comes in the form of the run game scheme. The Wing T coaches are going to wear you out with the Buck sweep and other Wing T favorites. The coaches using the Flank formation are thinking more about zone to the wing side and counter back away. Keep in mind that the Wing T coaches are even emptying their backfield and using motion to get to this.

As you watch this video begin to digest which version of this formation most suits your offense. You can then get into FirstDown PlayBook and get to the appropriate formation section. However, keep this in mind. You may find a wrinkle or two if you crossover and lookout both the Flank and the Wing T areas.
