Special Teams Game Day Call Sheet

Football coaches have been taking a visual game day special teams call sheet to the sideline for a long time. As much sense as a visual offense and defense call sheet makes, this makes even more sense. Why? Because a special teams coach’s fight for the players’ attention doesn’t end after a week of game preparation.
Even after the ball is kicked off on game day, a good special teams coach understands that they can never pass up a teaching moment.
This is why kicking game coaches have always taken a playbook onto the game field to show through out the game. This usually occurs when there is a break in the action after a scoring play.
As the game pauses for a TV timeout and you head to the kitchen or the rest room, coaches can be seen holding up the kickoff return play or the coverage.
Why the last second coaching? Well, once again, most of these players are offensive and/or defensive players too. Trust me when I say that their kickoff return blocking assignment is not at the top of their mind.
A Bulky Special Teams Game Day Book Is Obsolete
The same players you are about to send out on your punt coverage team might have just got an earful from the Defensive Coordinator about a blown assignment.
It is important that you get your special teams players to refocus on the next play and words are often not enough. A picture is definitely worth a thousand words when it comes in the form of a football playbook diagram.

So if special teams coaches have been doing this for years, the question might be asked so how does FirstDown PlayBook come into the picture to help?
The answer is is simple. Ease of use. Let me explain. For two years when I was an assistant special teams coach for the Chicago Bears, it was my job to carry the special teams “book” during the game.
Keep in mind that all of these plays were lamented because of possible bad weather and they were put in a big heavy three ring binder. It was a chore to heave it around for three hours every weekend.
