Packers Steal FDPB Short Yardage Play
The Green Bay Packers found themselves in a bit of a situation yesterday. They needed one yard for a first down against Detroit. A quarterback sneak would probably get it done. The problem they had when calling this short yardage play was that Jordan Love, their quarterback was already banged up. The Lions knew this and were not surprised when Love lined up in the Gun.
The Packers had obviously prepared for this very common situation and had a plan. As Love aligned in the shotgun, he brought the tight end in motion across the formation. However, when the tight end got to the center, he stopped and set up shop behind the center. From there, he took the snap and got behind the offensive line for an important first down.
This short yardage play worked like a charm and Green Bay put their injured quarterback in zero risk on the play. This si a play that FirstDown PlayBook has had in our short yardage and goalline section for several years now. Our version is slightly different. We run it out of 11 personnel and use a receiver as the trick play quarterback. The premise is the same.

It got us thinking about all of the help FirstDown PlayBook offers a coach at any level on those critical short yardage plays. Sometimes the help comes in the form of understanding exactly who will be blocked and more importantly who will not when the defense loads up the box.
There is also help with unbalanced formation short yardage plays that help you pick up that one critical yard. Keep in mind that this critical yard might be to get a new set of downs and to keep the clock running in a four minute situation.
