The benefits normally far outweigh the burden of using unbalanced formations though. Here at FirstDown PlayBook we saw it often early and often in 2022. We are talking about major college football and in the NFL too. The results were touchdowns in many cases.

What you end up seeing is poor fitting defenses with a gap left completely open. We also saw NFL defenses completely uncover an eligible receiver or two. The other hidden advantage of using unbalanced formations in your offense is that when you do line back up normally, the defense is playing slower as they make sure to diagnose your formations. Your offensive line coach will like that as he is drawing up the run game.
