Creating Duo Run Double Teams
We are spending a little more time here today on the Duo run game. We mentioned before that Duo is a very popular run because of its simplicity and downhill running game style. This is primarily made possible because of the double team blocks at the point of attack.
Duo, however, is just like almost every other run play in anyone’s playbook. It is better vs certain fronts than it is others. Defensive coaches are trying to win too. You can bet that if you are hurting a good Defensive Coordinator, they are going to adjust vs your Duo run game attack.
If you are playing a 40 front on defense, one of the first things you are likely going to see is an over front. The defense may get to it by calling the front to your dominant Tight End. If you are hurting them with Duo, they may just check the front to the Fullback.
Why is this such a big deal? Because your double team is now on a 3 technique with your Guard and Tackle. There’s nothing wrong with that but your problem lies with your Tight End. That player is matched up one on one with a Defensive End. Most Tight Ends won’t win this battle, particularly at the point of attack on your Duo run.
Sometimes You Have To Create Double Teams For Your Duo Run
Today’s short video takes a deeper look at this. We offer a couple solutions on how to find the double team blocks you want to make your Duo run effective. We take a look at how to create a “Check With Me’ at the line of scrimmage. This will allow you to run at the shade and the 5 technique.
FirstDown PlayBook also takes into account that your personnel may not allow you to take this approach. For you coaches, we look at a tackle over adjustment. This four man surface can often turn an Over front into an Under front. Once you get this you are right back to running your Duo run play into two great double teams!
