Youth Football Defense Angle Stunt

#1 Tool For Youth Football & Pop Warner Coaches

Okay, you have played your first youth football game or two and your Pop Warner defense is getting better. You have been disciplined about teaching the basic defensive fundamentals involving proper alignment and gap control. However, the offenses you are playing are also getting better. They are double teaming your undersized defensive linemen and consistently running the football inside. It may just be time to install an angle stunt for your defensive linemen.

There are a lot of pros and cons when it comes to adding movement to your youth football defensive line menu. The first thing to consider is that there is mandatory technique that needs to be taught. The advantage that you gain with the movement can quickly be erased if your young defensive linemen stand up as they stunt.

Have You Checked Out Last Of The Fullbacks?

For this reason, the first thing you must teach is how to maintain all of your basic fundamentals like low pad level and keeping a base. This may require that your young defensive linemen “cheat” a little to put themselves in a position to be successful. Remember, most good youth football offenses pound you inside and do not spread it out. It is important to have all of your gaps covered.

Are You Drawing More Than You Are Teaching & Coaching?

They may need to back off of the ball more than they normally play. This will allow them the space to stunt into the proper gap. If they do not get into their gap, you will have big problems. You may also need to teach them to align more head up as they stunt. Once again, this insures that you will have every defensive gap covered.

The adjustments also involve your linebackers. They must understand the new gap responsibilities after the ball is snapped. Your linebackers have an advantage and can see this unfold from a two point stance, five yards off of the ball. They still need to understand the overall scheme. They will also often be the players who call out the direction of this defensive angle stunt.

Your Slant & Angle Stunts Often Show Up On Goal Line Plays

Angle Stunt

Here at FirstDown PlayBook we label our stunts an “Angle” stunt if the defensive line is stunting away from the formation strength or the linebackers’ call. We label the stunt “Slant” if the defensive linemen are moving to the call. Both can be very effective if executed properly.
