Youth Football Focus: Double Wing

By Charlie Coiner on May 20, 2026

Every youth football coach out there who plays their best player at quarterback raise your hand. Okay, this is for you. You other two coaches… we will talk about your running back maybe next week. We are asking the question because today’s FirstDown PlayBook youth football play focus is simple. Let your Pop Warner quarterback take the game over with some Double Wing formation lead blocking help. Also, teach some very important football fundamentals as you run it and your opponent defends it.

Before you turn your nose up at this play because it’s too simple consider what it looks like for the defense. There are lead blockers that force your youth football opponent to play sound fundamental defense. They will have to keep contain, shed blocks and make the tackle on your best player.

This Youth Football Double Wing QB Sweep Teaches Fundamentals

Every youth football player in this play is learning something that players at every level must learn in order to be good. Look at the offensive line blocking. You have three essential blocks that you will see on any given Sunday.

  • Down Blocks
  • Pullers
  • Backside Cutoff Blocks

For you who look at this play and say it is not a fair play for young defensive players lining up in a USA Football league, I would say it is the perfect play to teach defensive fits and responsibility. Once again, someone had better contain the play. Another player or players should be filling inside out and everyone else should be taking great pursuit angles to the ball.

More From FirstDown PlayBook: Defending A Youth Football Toss Sweep

Here at FirstDown PlayBook, these are the things that we know are important. We understand it is not about the youth football coach. Wins are hollow as time goes on. If you are coaching youth football wanting to win as opposed to teaching the game, you are wrong and bad for youth football. You and your parents should be focused on the development of your players.

If you are developing young players and the skills they will need to play at the next level then you are doing it correctly. The “next level” is the next youth football, middle school or high school team they will play on, just to be clear. The skills needed to be a good football player are normally learned by progression teaching.

Look closely you will see that FirstDown PlayBook blocks your plays against multiple fronts. Know why? Because you will face multiple defenses this year. Choose the defense you are facing, make your edits and you are set.
