Okay, it’s June. It’s time to start getting serious about preparing for your youth football or flag football team you plan to coach. Here’s the first lesson for every youth football coach and flag football coach…It Ain’t About You, Coach.
Don’t take this personally. The statement holds up regardless of if you are talking about the NFL, college or high school football too. It’s always about the players and if you don’t understand that, you are going to struggle mightily.
This is lesson number one for coaches at all levels. It’s particularly critical to remember that it’s always about the kids on your roster when coaching a youth football team. Everything that you do when planning your practices or games should be prefaced with this question. “Is this helping the players?
It can be easier to say than do sometimes. We are all competitive. When the word “Coach” gets put in front of our name there is a certain amount of power that comes with it. Deserved or not.
Here’s a good way to help prevent abusing that power. The best coaches we have ever seen in our years of coaching always replace “coach” with “teacher” in their minds when they work with their players.
