The Transfer Portal Will Produce Better Teachers

So much wrong about the transfer portal but it will create better football teachers than we have ever had before.

The best teachers and football coaches are in the NFL for a reason. No, it’s not the money. The money comes because they are the best teachers and the best communicators. What is often lost when looking at the NFL is how coaches have to be great teachers in a hurry. The transfer portal is about to have the same effect on college football.

Please know that I hate the transfer portal just like any sensible college football coach or fan does. Good intentions from clueless people have put us where we are. A big mess. There is an NFL model out there that allows free agency after the season is completely over and within a period of time.

Back to the original point. College football coaches are now going to need to evolve. Your job is no longer about nurturing a kid from a redshirt freshman year as they mature. Your job is to get a player ready in short increments of time.

The Transfer Portal Will Produce College Coaches Who Can Teach Better & Faster.

A good college coach must take a player they have never met before and develop them quickly over the next 365 days. After that year, the same position coach must now be prepared to that very same thing with a new group of players.

College football has now become very transactional, just like the NFL. Every year is a new year and every team is a new team. Players will come and players will go. Just like coaches come and go. A good head coach will bond a group of strangers in that 365 days. A good position coach or coordinator will get their group developed and taught in that same period of time.

Any person with common sense can see the danger this has with creating bad human beings (players & coaches). However; what it will also do is expose some coaches who are baby sitters and not great teachers. It will also make great teachers very valuable. Assistant coaches who can teach, and teach in a hurry are now at a premium.

Regardless of what you might see and hear on TV, great teachers are not born. They are planners. They prepare. If you are an assistant coach who can be ready for any situation at the drop of a hat, you are very hireable. If you have your teaching progression laid out in an organized manner you will stand out.

Here at FirstDown PlayBook we have roots in the NFL and how they teach. Let us help you prepare as you organize your teaching.. FirstDown PlayBook does not try to coach your players for you. We just help you coach your players better.

If you want to go into a job interview prepared, we can make that a lot easier. If you want to be ready for the transactional world of college and even high school football, we are there for you too.
