Switch Releases Good For Joe Burrow & Your QB Too.
We have mentioned before here at FirstDown PlayBook about how much we like switch releases. The benefits for a receiver are obvious but it doesn’t stop there.
There is a long list of young quarterbacks who were done before they ever got started in the NFL. Some of them were just not good enough but that is not always the case.
Sometimes an offensive coordinator’s inability to be patient and smart with a young rookie quarterback can contribute to this. One very common thing coordinators can do is to help the quarterback get the ball out of his hand quickly.
Holding the ball very long in the NFL is a great way to get sacked, if not also hurt. This is easier said than done because the defense understands this too.
If you are lining up with a young quarterback and you are in a third down situation you can expect some press coverage. This helps the defense take away the quick decisions and throws.
One thing that a play caller can do to help the young quarterback is to include switch releases in the game plan. This allows receivers to have more room to release. It also allows them to come open sooner. We took some time this week to look at the Bengals and how they are using this as they groom Joe Burrow.

The Bengals upset the Titans this past weekend. As we watched the video we saw a lot of switch releases and Burrow getting the ball out very quickly. This is a lesson that offensive coordinators at all levels can use. Particularly if you are playing with a young signal caller.
