Stretching Youth Football Players?

Let’s be honest, youth football coaches stretch their Pop Warner or NFL Flag team before practice for one of two reasons. The first reason is because that’s what their football coaches did at the beginning of practice. The second reason is that it buys the coaches time to get organized for the practice.

As was once explained to me by a savvy veteran football coach. Ever seen a deer stretch before it runs? Kids are the same way.

As we said, there are really two reasons coaches stretch a youth football team. Both of these reasons are bad ones. If you want to create a bad experience for a Pop Warner aged player, start practice off by making them lay down on their backs in the wet grass looking up into the hot sun.

Keep in mind they are doing this as they stretch the muscles they barely have. Your youth football players don’t need to stretch. If you ask us the best way to warm your youth players up as you begin practice is to ease into it with slower moving drills.

Stretching youth football players before practice happens for one of two reasons. Both are wrong for your Pop Warner & NFL Flag aged players.

You can build up the tempo from there. This way you are practicing and teaching as you get your players lathered up a little. This is not to mention that you are engaging your players and making the game fun for them as they get better. If you are running your NFL Flag players before practice this serves no purpose in our thinking. It only ruins the expericence for them and probably you.

In regards to conditioning, if your practices are organized properly and your players are always on the move, you will have little to no need for extra conditioning even at the end of your practices. You should have your team will be completely exhausted from working on actual football related activities.
