Spread Or Wing T Or Both. We Got It.
It’s that time of the year. Coaches are getting fired and others are lining up to replace them. Just part of the process I guess. Another thing that happens this time of year is the great high school football debate. Check out social media and you will see it. Do you run a Spread or a Wing T offense? Trust me when I say this annual debate is a real thing.
It is all in fun (most of it) and of course totally depended on the players that walk your high school halls. This won’t change the fact that year in and year out this debate will rage on about Spread offenses and Wing T offenses.
The Wing T Offense Is Proven At The High School & Youth Football Level
It is part of what makes football coaching so great, isn’t it? Show me a football coach who is not convinced that the system they run is the best and I will show you a sad coach at the end of the football season. You must have a strong conviction to the system you run as a football coach.
Here is a point we would like to make. Even if you do not run either offense, there is benefit in understanding the pros and cons of each. Why? It’s simple. You may have to stop one or both of these offenses next season. Have you ever tried running an effective scout team offense that you do not understand? Good luck.
FirstDown PlayBook Has Deep NFL Roots In The Spread Offense
As a head coach you are challenged with looking at your entire program. You will be responsible for everything from managing a budget to understanding what your opponents run on offense and defense. You may run the ball 50 times a game with your Wing T offense. Can you defend an empty formation with 35 passes a game? The other side of that coin can be even harder as they run the Bucksweep for 8-9 yards at a crack against your defense who is used to playing nickel personnel.
If you want to get better at what you do or learn about what you may have to defend then you have choices. You can scan the internet. Maybe attend a clinic or five. You can even call your buddies. However, before you do any of those, consider this. Detailed help lives in FirstDown PlayBook where you can study it, edit it, save it and yes, keep it forever.
The Spread Wing T Section In FirstDown PlayBook Gives You Both
A great example is the Spread Wing T area in our Find a PlayBook section. There is a group of coaches who have decided that they do not have to choose between Wing T or Spread offense. These coaches run a hybrid version of both.
Some call it Gun Wing T and others call it Spread Wing T. The only thing I will say is that it is good stuff and if you understand what you are doing, you will have a nearly unstoppable RPO offense. You can find these editable plays in FirstDown PlayBook too.
