#1 Tool For Youth Football & Pop Warner Coaches

Sometimes youth football coaches can get themselves in trouble when they try to mix and match parts and pieces of defenses. It’s one of the early lessons that even Pop Warner coaches learn. Your front has to tie into your coverage and vice versa. Today we are going to look at a 6-2 defense with cover 3 behind it as an example.

A 6-2 defense is essentially an eight man front with six of those defenders dedicated to stopping the run or rushing the quarterback. So that leaves you with five defenders to cover the underneath and deep zones.

.

We traditionally play man coverage with our youth football section. In the FirstDown PlayBook 6-2 Defense webinar we talked about it but did not draw it up. We have mentioned here before that if you coach really young players, it is hard to beat the 6-2 defense.

The 6-2 youth football defense is a run stopper. If you’re honest with yourself, the Pop Warner passing game you defend is almost non existent. Once your players get to the age of 11 or 12 then things change a little. You may need to adjust to cover slot receivers and spread formations. The youth football 4-4 usually is a good choice at this age.

If you are lining up in a youth football 6-2 defense with zone coverage you are going to cheat a little. NFL teams do this a lot but only on the goal line. You are going to take away the most obvious short throws inside to out and shallow to deep. If played correctly, the offense may not even know that you are playing zone coverage.

Today we draw this up using the FirstDown PlayBook Play Editor. The short video below takes you through a couple of ways that you can play 6-2 defense with cover 3 behind it. Keep in mind that it is not a traditional way to play this coverage but a viable way nonetheless!
