Youth Football Coach. Don’t Out Coach Yourself.

By FirstDown PlayBook on Jun 11, 2023

If you are a youth football coach, please don’t be offended by what you are about to read. This advice could hold true for just about any level of football including what you watch on Saturday and Sunday. The message today is that if you out coach anyone this fall it will probably be yourself and your youth football team. When we say “out coach” we mean “out scheme”.

Regardless of what you read on the internet, you are rarely going to out scheme anyone at the youth football level. It rarely happens at the higher levels of football and the chance of it happening with nine and ten year olds is even more remote.

Before you think we are implying that coaching doesn’t matter for your youth football team, let us explain. You certainly can out coach the other team. As a youth football coach you can teach your team to out fundamental them. Your team can out technique them and out execute your opponent. And of course your team can out hustle the other team.

6 Defenses NFL Coaches Think You Should Consider

When it comes to scheme we suggest that you find one or two formations. Maybe run those two formations left and right but only maybe. After that, find three or four run plays at the very most. Remember that your team will have to block these plays vs multiple defenses. Find two pass plays that your quarterback can complete. Then stop. You are going to out coach yourself if you do any more.

Now once you understand that package inside and out. Teach it to your coaches and break it down into parts where the assistant coaches become experts at their part. You may break it up into positions like a regular football staff but you also may break your fundamentals up into groups. Here’s a tip. Do some research before the season. You may find you have some willing and able assistant coaches among your parents.

For example, one assistant coach is in charge of tackling or flag pulling and another is responsible for proper blocking technique while yet another would oversee ball handling. This is important. If you do not coach your coaches and give them some responsibility, your team will suffer because everyone will be standing around watching you.
