Rams 2 Tight End Counter Play

By FirstDown PlayBook on Dec 15, 2020

Let’s look at this counter play today. Each Tuesday here at FirstDown PlayBook we get together with other leaders in the football industry to bring you All 22 Tuesday. Be sure to check back here each week as Coach & Coordinator’s Keith GrabowskiThe Scouting Academy’s Dan Hatman and FNF Coaches join us to draw up and analyze some of your favorite plays from this past weekend!

During the 2019 football season we documented many times how the offenses were stretching the football field horizontally. Defenses were being forced to defend every inch of the 53 and a third of the field.

That certainly has not disappeared in 2020 but as is always the case football has a way of recycling. We have noticed more tight ends and fullbacks showing up on the 53 man rosters. This makes it easier to run different variations of a counter play.

This has given NFL offenses and even colleges in some cases more downhill punch with their run game. We noticed that the Rams open their game up with the Patriots this way last Thursday.

As you can see in the drawing and the actual video below, Los Angeles got two pullers on this weak side counter. As we mention in the video there are a number of plays that can be dialed up out of this package.

Other than the weak side counter you also have the Toss Crack to the strong side. The Split Zone and all of the Slide Nakeds that go with it. You also have a Jet Sweep to the Wing Tight End.
