Slot Blocks Still Count…

There is still a place for receivers who will block in football. Specifically we are referring to slot blocks today. We are like the rest of football coaches when it comes to the pass game. We don’t pay near enough attention to the Bootleg and Naked pass game. There is so much milage there that is normally left on the table.

Good football coaches understand that the Boot & Naked pass game is so lethal because it ties directly into the run game. We are not only talking about the offensive line either.

This play shows why there is still merit in having your slots block instead of running screens all day. In this case we are highlighting the F slot receiver. If you are running the weak side zone you can make a living off of this play if the slot can/will block.

We will take it a step further and add that your talented slot receivers will begin to appreciate these plays. Instead of looking at them as blocking on the run plays they will quickly see how it all fits together.

Every time they go dig out or wash a safety down inside they will know that the boot return route must look exactly the same. If it does that means that soon they are going to have the ball in their hands with a lot of green grass in front of them.

This is why there is still room for slot blocks. It’s also why there will always be slot receivers like Cooper Kupp who make a lot of money in the NFL.
