Set Up An Explosive H Post Pump

By FirstDown PlayBook on Dec 28, 2025

When you watch the San Francisco 49ers and Christian McCaffrey repeatedly complete passes out of the backfield it can be tempting to incorporate this into your game plan. The problem is that you do not have Christian McCaffrey to run those option routes. That being said there is still a way to use your backs in the passing game more. Today FirstDown PlayBook looks at how you can set up this H Post Pump.

As you watch the video below you will see that we have this H Post and H Post Pump coming off of the common Drive concept. Hitting the third option on a Drive concept is often “easy money”. It’s a chance to get the ball to one of your best athletes, who is often your running back.

If you want to make that even better then you get the ball to the back on the move with a short post. When you stop to think about it you can run the Drive concept two or three times before you even need to get to the back.

Like Most Explosive Plays This H Post Pump Should Be Set Up First

We call the formation below Flank. This can be a very effective run formation to the two tight end side. It is also a great formation to run Drive out of. Flank also allows you to be creative on the two receiver side. Odds are you will get the middle of the field closed because the defense needs to stop the run.

So why is FirstDown PlayBook pointing out all of these things as we feature the play below? It’s because after you run the ball enough and then the Drive concept with the H post enough, this is the home run call you are looking for.
