Mahomes & His Own Misdirection Football Play

By FirstDown PlayBook on Nov 18, 2020

There is nothing novel about the use of a misdirection football play in an offensive game plan. In fact, if you don’t see it enough, you can bet the offensive production will suffer mightily.

What you don’t see very often is a player talented enough to create his own misdirection. Meaning that the player starts one way by design and then counters back the other direction. There is no fake other than the player with the ball.

We will even take it one step further. What the Kansas City Chiefs have done in the football play below with Patrick Mahomes is even more rare. They have created flow just by snapping the ball to the quarterback on the move. This makes it a one man misdirection football play.

After this, Mahomes simply boots the other direction and goes through a bootleg pass read of low to high. The low part of the read is Tyreek hill which is always sure to draw attention from the defense as well.

The result? A beautifully designed tight red zone play that we would be willing to bet was on the Chiefs’ 2 point play menu as well. The play drawing above shows just how simple this scheme is to execute.

In fact, if you have a quarterback on your roster who attracts a lot of attention in the run game, this might be a play you want to consider for your next game plan! Regardless of the level you coach this football play design is simple enough to execute.
