FirstDown PlayBook Welcomes Jerry Brakel
There is something about Texas high school football. Having lived there on four different occasions in my lifetime I had a chance to witness it first hand. This is why when we started looking for a Texas football coach to represent FirstDown PlayBook, Jerry Brakel checked all of the boxes.
In a state that has two NFL teams and 17 Division I college football teams, neither of these two facts are what make Texas football, well, Texas football. Anyone who is from there, lives there or has spent time there will tell you this. Texas High School football is what makes Texas football different.
Is it the talent? Maybe, but there is plenty of talent in other states as well. Is it the coaching? Some of the best high school coaches in the country do it in Texas. However, it’s hard to find a state in this country that doesn’t have some excellent football coaches.

A deeper look into Texas High School football will show you it is the culture, the community and the commitment to playing our game at a high level. This brings us to Jerry Brakel. Jerry is a Crowley, Texas product. He played football and baseball at Crowley High School before graduating from Sam Houston State.
Jerry made multiple coaching stops throughout his career. He served as an Offensive Coordinator & Assistant Head Coach at Sinton, Mansfield Timberview, Irving Nimitz, Killeen Ellison, and Burleson Centennial. He also served as Athletic Director and Head Football Coach at Gilmer Union Hill. In all, Coach Brakel has dedicated over 25 years of his life as a Texas High School football coach.
