New Coaching Job

We don’t feature the bootleg pass game enough on the FirstDown PlayBook Coaches Community site. Odds are you don’t enough either when you are game planning for your quarterback and offense.

Here at FirstDown PlayBook we break our varsity passing game up into four distinct areas.

1. Dropback 2. Play Action 3. Sprint Out 4. Boots-Waggles and Nakeds.

.

Everyone loves our dropback section and why not? There are thousands of passing game ideas drawn up by NFL coaches. However, we don’t talk enough about the advantages of moving your quarterback around in the passing game. In particular, we don’t mention the bootleg pass game enough.

Today, we have created a short video that shows you several different ways to get your young quarterback outside of the pocket. This can be extremely helpful for any quarterback but particularly for a young quarterback.

Before you watch this helpful video please understand the definition we use for the FirstDown PlayBook Boot pass game. We break these plays up itno three categories:

  1. Bootleg Pass: QB fakes one direction and boots away from that. There are blockers on the line of scrimmage that allow your quarterback to break the pocket.
  2. Naked Bootleg: QB fakes one direction and boots away from that. There are not edge blockers to protect the quarterback.
  3. Waggle Pass: QB fakes one direction and boots away from that. There is edge protection to the boot side provided by the backside guard as they pull and pin the edge rusher to the boot side.

Below Please See An Example Of A Waggle Pass Play

FORMATION: 3×1 Wing

COMES OFF OF THIS RUN PLAY: Inside zone weak

PROTECTION: Waggle (Offside Guard is pulling)

BOOTLEG PASS PLAY: Waggle Strong 471

QB ACTION: Fake inside zone and boot leg opposite.

QB Read: F-X-Z-Run

BOOTLEG PASS GAME COACHING POINTS:

-QB will reverse out and execute run fake away.
-QB will use boot action away gaining depth initially from the LOS.
-The QB must get his head around and look for targets high to low.
-The QB will stay on the move and break the pocket as he goes thru his read.
-QB will progress thru the read always aware that running the ball is an option.

You Can Also Move Your QB With The Sprint Out Pass Game.

-The Z will sell the backside cutoff block with patience. He is the third read.
-The Z can look inside and see the QB’s timing to know when to execute the return.
-The Over route must gain ground across the field as he gains depth.
-The F will use best release and keep the Corner route high vs cover 2.
-The Y is patient as he sells the back side block and will pin the DE late.
-The pulling Guard will fit outside of the TE ad protect outside in.
