Young Coordinator, The 2036 You Wants To Have A Talk

By FirstDown PlayBook on Apr 29, 2026

You just have been named offensive coordinator or defensive coordinator at your high school or college and this is your first time with the job title. Congratulations. The good news is you now have a chance to run your version of your system. The bad news is that you are going to screw up a lot. Don’t believe me? Save this blog and in 2036 sit down with that football coach version of yourself. That older coach will tell you the same.

Don’t be hard on yourself. Every coordinator in football that is fortunate and prepared enough to make it ten years will tell you the same thing. You gain from the coaching experience because the successes teach you and the failures will mold you to not do that again. However; the more mistakes that can be avoided, the better off you will be.

Young Offensive Coordinator…Your Going To Make Freshman Mistakes

Where am I going with this? It’s a really a non subtle hint that you can avoid a lot of those freshman and sophomore mistakes by listening to those who have done it before you. Scott Criner is one of those coaches who has done it for many years at many levels.

Full disclosure, Coach Criner comes from the offensive side of the ball. He and his crew at ID 43 have produced a series of videos designed to help a young Offensive Coordinator from stepping in it. Here at FirstDown PlayBook, we have just been fortunate enough to help young coaches by getting an early (free) look at what “So You Want To Call Plays” is all about.

So if you are new to the Offensive Coordinator world, do yourself a favor. Listen to the 2036 version of yourself. An older, experienced and bruised version of you will tell you to listen to all of the advice you can get from football coaches right now. Defensive Coordinators, this means you too. FirstDown PlayBook will revisit your future soon.
