FirstDown PlayBook has watched as young inexperienced coaches, new to the flag football world begin their journey. Some of these coaches have thrived while others have found out that there is a lot that goes into starting a team, program and league. Today we want to introduce you to three coaches doing it exceptionally well, Liz Sowers, Katie Sowers and Amanda Ruller.

Liz & Katie Sowers Celebrate National Championship Number Five!

The fact that some have struggled is not necessarily surprising. Getting started with coaching football is a daunting task even if you have years of experience playing or as an assistant coach. This is what makes flag football even more complicated. There are not many examples to look at and say “That’s the way to do it”.

Today we want to point you towards two success stories that you can look to as a blueprint as you are starting your flag football team. Here at FirstDown PlayBook we have a front row seat as these coaches are using FirstDown PlayBook to build their flag football programs.

The first example is really two coaches who are setting records and making flag football history as sisters. Twin sisters. Liz and Katie Sowers have won the first five NAIA national championships. You read that right. Five national championships.

I have personally studied their offensive and defensive schemes over that period of time. As a thirty year NFL and college football coach, I can tell you that they are very sound in everything they do. Of course I also wan to believe that we help them teach better by using FirstDown PlayBook. The fact that they have used the FirstDown PlayBook flag football system for all five years makes me think that they do.

Here’s another thing that makes the Liz Sowers and sister Katie pioneers of the game. They were recently hired as the new women’s flag football coaches at Nebraska. You can bet that the level of play is going to improve and these two will have all eyes on them as they compete where there has been no competition before. I cannot wait to see them on the big stage.

My second example of a ground breaking coach, coaches both flag football and tackle football at the college level. Amanda Ruller knows football. I can tell you that because I know football and I have heard her clinic before. I have also watched her teams play.

“Too many coaches chase plays. The best coaches build systems. In both flag and tackle, success comes from understanding how everything connects from formations, concepts, sequencing, and personnel. FirstDown PlayBook gives you the tools to organize it all, so you’re not just calling plays, you’re calling an offense with purpose.”

One conversation with Amanda Ruller and you understand that there is a passion for flag football and tackle football that burns bright. When she talks football or coaches football, you understand that she loves football.

Amanda is currently the head flag football coach at Eastern University where her lady Eagles are 5-0. I recently spoke with Amanda and she revealed that she was actually working with FirstDown PlayBook at that very moment.

There Are Not Many Examples Of How To Start A Program Because The Game Is Still Relatively New.”

As a coach who is entrenched in tackle and flag football, Amanda Ruller is someone to look to for advice on how to start a program, how to organize a program and last but not least, how to be successful coaching your team and program.

So if you are out there and you will soon be in charge of a flag football program. Here are two examples of coaches to look at for how to do it. You are fortunate to have them there as pioneers who came before you. Keep in mind that FirstDown PlayBook is there for you too.
