Training Quarterback Fundamentals In Season
Todays focus on training quarterback fundamentals comes to us from John Shoop who has spent this summer overseas. The Rhein Fire just won their second consecutive European League Football championship this past weekend. Congratulations to Jim Tomsula and his Rhein Fire staff as they defeated the Vienna Vikings 51-20 on Sunday. They have been dominant over the past two seasons.
One of the off-season additions to the Rhein Fire staff was John Shoop being hired as the Quarterbacks coach. With the complete benefit of hindsight that was a very good hire. Rhein Fire’s Jadrian Clark had a super year and was named the MVP in the championship game.
There are not many football coaches who have had the opportunity to coach quarterbacks at the high school level, the college level and at the professional level. John Shoop is one such coach. He has recently been busy leaving his footprint in the European League Football.

USA Football’s Keith Grabowski and FirstDown PlayBook’s Charlie Coiner spent some time with John on the Coach & Coordinator podcast several years back. Shoop has coached professional quarterbacks for the Carolina Panthers, the Chicago Bears, the Tampa Bay Bucs and the Oakland Raiders. He has added to that resume with his ELF experience coaching quarterbacks at Munich and Rhein.
His college stops include stints at Vanderbilt, North Carolina and Purdue. He also coached the quarterbacks at Reynolds high school in Asheville, North Carolina. As you can see he has a vast resume when it comes to teaching quarterback fundamentals.
