Most Thursdays here on the FirstDown PlayBook Coaches Community website we will feature a breakdown of personnel and technique. This is provided by our friends over at The Scouting Academy who are our go to experts in this field!

Much was made recently about the Seahawks’ willingness to part with two first-round draft picks for a safety. We aren’t here to make any judgement on positional value, or who won the trade. What is clear, though, is that the calculus was different for Jamal Adams because he does so much beyond what a traditional safety does.

One area where he provides additional value is his ability to be a physical presence in coverage and eliminate an opposing player in Man coverage. Here, Adams is lined up right over the TE and is there to meet him with a very physical jam to disrupt the timing of the route.

As his man works into the route, Adams is able to maintain contact while also getting his eyes to the QB. He’s able to stay in the hip pocket of the TE, and as he sees the QB start to throw, he bursts to undercut the route and knock the ball away.
