Onside Kick Shows Importance Of Pre-Play Tips
There were a couple of plays in the NFL this past week that jumped out at us. This onside kick that we have drawn up was one of them. It got us thinking about pre-snap cues and tips.
There is a school of thought throughout football coaching that says “coach’em up during the week and let them play on game day.” There is a lot of merit to that because regardless of what we like to think, as coaches, the game is fast and the players normally have a better picture of what is happening on the field than we do.
This is not to say that there is no merit in reminding the players about things as the game goes on. Once again, the game is fast and has a lot of moving parts. If you are a special teams coach you learn quickly that your players will likely be more focused on their normal position than what they play for you on teams.

This is why it is important as the special teams coach to give as many reminders as you can to your players during play stoppage. This means while you are huddled up on the sideline. It also means as you take the field and begin to line up.

Over the first two weeks in this young NFL season there have been two critical mistakes on kickoff return units. Both of these plays had big time tips about what was about to happen based on the kicker’s ball placement. The onside kick we have drawn up below that the Cowboys pulled off is one of them.
