New Spread Option Installs Coming This Winter

FirstDown PlayBook will be installing an abundance of spread option content this winter. We will do our due diligence and study some of the best minds in the spread option game and provide it for you right on FirstDown PlayBook.

This way you won’t spend your valuable time drawing. That’s what FirstDown PlayBook is here for. Here is one example of what we will be installing. If you have a preferences on what you want us to draw up just let us know. We might bump it up to the beginning of the list!

The spread option game has been steadily growing at all levels of football. We noticed this while back as it began to take hold in the NFL. So hang on as we begin to make sure we stay up with all this growth in FirstDown PlayBook!

FORMATION: 2X2 OPEN GUN

PLAY: QB POWER -JET SWEEP READ

DESCRIPTION:

-TYPICALLY RUN OUT OF 10 OR 11 PERSONNEL.

-OPTION PLAY BASED ON THE TECHNIQUE OF THE STRONG SIDE END.

-THE PLAYSIDE END IS NOT BLOCKED BUT INSTEAD HE IS READ.

-BEST IF RUN TO A 3 TECHNIQUE.

-GOOD VS A 6 OR 7 MAN BOX.

SPREAD OPTION: QB POWER -JET SWEEP READ GENERAL RULES:

-THE OFFENSIVE LINE WILL EXECUTE POWER SCHEME BLOCKING.

-THE OFFENSIVE LINE WILL FIND A DOUBLE TEAM (3 TECH OR SHADE) TO THE BACKSIDE LB.

-THE Y WILL BLOCK ANY ALLEY PLAYER OUTSIDE IN.

-THE PULLING GUARD WILL AVOID THE END AND BLOCK THE FIRST SECOND LEVEL DEFENDER LOOKING INSIDE OUT.

-THE QB WILL HAND THE BALL OFF ON THE JET OR KEEP IT BASED ON THE DEFENSIVE END’S REACTION.

QB:

-CATCH THE SNAP AND SEAT THE BALL OUT FRONT FOR THE JET RUNNER.

-EXTEND THE BALL TO THE JET RUNNER AS HE CROSSES YOUR FACE WITH SPEED TO THE EDGE.

-SHUFFLE WITH THE JET RUNNER TO THE B GAP AS YOU READ THE DEFENSIVE END.

-IF THE DEFENSIVE END WIDENS WITH THE JET RUNNER KEEP THE BALL AND HIT DOWNHILL IN THE B GAP.

-IF THE DEFENSIVE END DOES NOT WIDEN GIVE THE BALL TO THE JET RUNNER.


X: JET RUNNER

-COME IN MOTION ON THE QB’S HEEL.

-ON THE SNAP SPRINT IN FRONT AND ACROSS THE QB’S FACE WITH NEAR ARM UP.

-BE PREPARED FOR THE QB’S MESH AS HE WILL HAND THE BALL OR PULL IT.

-STAY FLAT AND ATTACK THE FLANK. TURN UP JUST AFTER REACHING THE Y’S BLOCK.

-FULL SPEED EXECUTION IS ESSENTIAL TO THE PLAY’S SUCCESS.


WIDE RECEIVERS:

-PLAYSIDE: BLOCK MAN ON.

-BACKSIDE: BACKSIDE CUTOFF ON MOST DANGEROUS DEFENDER.


TIGHT END (Y):

-BLOCK THE ALLEY DEFENDER WITH OUTSIDE LEVERAGE.

-IF THE PULLING GUARD BLOCKS YOUR MAN GO TO NEXT LEVEL FOR A BLOCK.

-THE H WILL REACT OFF OF YOUR BLOCK SO BE DECISIVE WITH YOUR BLOCK.


H:

-ON THE SNAP OPEN TO THE PLAY SIDE SIDELINE.

-ARC RELEASE UP THE FIELD TO ARC BLOCK THE PERIMETER.

-IF THE Y BLOCKS THE ALLEY DEFENDER CLIMB TO THE NEXT LEVEL FOR YOUR BLOCK.

-IF THE Y CLIMBS TO THE SAFETY BLOCK THE ALLEY DEFENDER WITH OUTSIDE LEVERAGE.


OFFENSIVE LINE:

-POWER BLOCKING RULES.

-LEAVE THE PLAYSIDE END UNBLOCKED.


PLAYSIDE TACKLE:

-DOUBLE TEAM ANY B GAP DEFENDER WITH THE GUARD BACK TO THE SECOND LB OFF THE BALL.

-ATTEMPT TO VEER RELEASE ANY DEFENDER THAT LINES UP ON TO OUTSIDE OF YOU.

-VEER RELEASE TO FIRST LB OFF OF THE BALL BACKSIDE.

-BLOCK DOWN ON THE DEFENDER IF THEY PINCH INSIDE. DO NOT ALLOW PENETRATION.

-VS A SOLID FRONT SOLO DOWN ON THE B GAP DEFENDER.


PLAYSIDE GUARD:

-DOUBLE TEAM ANY B GAP DEFENDER WITH THE TACKLE BACK TO THE SECOND LB OFF OF THE BALL.

-DOUBLE TEAM ANY A GAP DEFENDER WITH CENTER TO BACKSIDE LB.

-VS SOLID BLOCK DOWN ON THE A GAP DEFENDER AND EXPECT THE CENTER TO BE GONE.


CENTER:

-DOUBLE TEAM ANY A GAP DEFENDER STRONG WITH THE GUARD TO THE BACKSIDE LB.

-BLOCK BACK VS ANY A GAP DEFENDER WEAK TO SECURE THE GUARD PULL.

-VS SOLID BLOCK BACK WEAK TO SECURE THE GUARD PULL.


BACKSIDE GUARD:

-SQUARE PULL PLAYSIDE AND LOOK TO NEGOTIATE THE “READ” DEFFENSIVE END.

-INSERT IN THE FIRST OPENING OUTSIDE OF THE OFFENSIVE TACKLE.

-BLOCK THE FIRST LB OFF OF THE BALL LOOKING INSIDE OUT.


BACKSIDE TACKLE:

-HINGE BLOCK INSIDE TO SECURE B GAP EARLY.

-LOOK OUTSIDE LATE TO SECURE ANY C GAP DEFENDER WHO IS A THREAT.
