Flag Football Man Coverage With Rules

There is an old defensive adage that goes something like all zone coverage turns into man coverage at some point. The point is well made because the ball becomes the issue at some point. It’s a two way street though and we want to explain this today as we look at teaching NFL Flag football aged players man coverage.

One of the first things that happens when you agree to coach young flag football team is you realize your players’ limitations due to age, size and talent. This is not exclusive to offense either. Coaching flag football defense also requires that you keep it as simple as possible.

Good flag football coaches find a way to give their NFL Flag aged players tools to be successful while not confusing them in the process. Today’s video speaks directly to this. We explain how to teach flag football man coverage with rules that allow your defense not to get picked and rubbed vs bunch sets and formations.

Too Many Flag Football Coaches Make It Harder Than It Needs To Be

THIS 5V5 FLAG FOOTBALL MAN COVERAGE DEFENSE HAS THE FOLLOWING POSITIONS:

3 LINEBACKERS: RIGHT, MIDDLE & LEFT

2 DEFENSIVE BACKS: RIGHT & LEFT

THIS 5V5 DEFENSES WILL BE CALLED WITH THREE DIGITS:

THE FIRST DIGIT IS THE NUMBER OF RUSHERS TO THE QB.

THE SECOND DIGIT IS THE NUMBER INTERMEDIATE TO DEEP COVERAGE DEFENDERS.

THE THIRD DIGIT IS THE NUMBER OF DEEP COVERAGE DEFENDERS.

MAN COVERAGE DEFENSES WILL BE CALLED “MAN COVERAGE” & TAGGED WITH ANY PRESSURE IF NECESSARY.

DEFENSE: FLAG FOOTBALL MAN COVERAGE

THERE WILL BE A STRENGTH CALL MADE AS THE OFFENSE BREAKS THE HUDDLE OR IT CAN BE SET PRIOR TO.

THE MIKE LINEBACKER WILL RUSH THE PASSER.

THE OTHER LINEBACKERS WILL COVER THE CENTER AND THE BACK MAN TO MAN.

THE DEFENSIVE BACKS WILL COVER THE TWO WR’S MAN TO MAN.

VS A BUNCH SET A LINEBACKER WILL TAKE THE POINT.

LINEBACKERS:

MIKE LINEBACKER:

-ADHERE TO THE RULES OF YOUR LEAGUE FOR YOUR DEPTH ON THE SNAP OF THE BALL.

EXAMPLE: YOUR RESTRAINING LINE IS 5 YARDS THEN BE BEHIND THAT LINE.

ALIGN ON OR NEAR THE CENTER BUNCH PRIOR TO THE SNAP.

-RUSH THE QB AND DEFEND ANY RUN THAT SHOWS UP ON YOUR WAY TO THE QB.
