Disguising Your Flag Football Coverage

The flag football game is growing with or without you. If you are not coaching, you can sit back and enjoy the growth. It will be fun to see. If you are coaching and you are keeping up, good for you. If you are that dude who is going to line up in man coverage on defense every snap, you have a problem or two coming right at you.
In the past FirstDown PlayBook has been dismissive of zone coverage when talking about youth flag football. We stand by that. In our opinion, teaching 8 year olds zone coverage is like teaching your dog to only chase that squirrel if he comes into your area.
However, what was once a children’s game has been adopted by the adults. Some of the adults are young adults in high school and college. Others are post education and have regular jobs. Our point here is that all of these groups can and should play some flag football zone coverage.
The main thing we want to look at today is how to play multiple flag football zone coverages while giving the same look pre-snap. Keep in mind that multiple can mean two. Your pre-snap coverage may be a way to play 2 deep or 3 deep on the snap. The Ottawa Women have executed this at a high level over the past five years.
You will notice that we have drawn the coverages on a tackle regulation football field. The only reason we do this is because there are so many fields being played on out there. FirstDown PlayBook allows you to edit your plays and the field that you draw them on.

This is a factor when playing flag football zone coverage because there isn’t as much field to cover. This is helpful for the flag football defense. You will notice this in the video as FirstDown PlayBook also details how we play 4 deep and 2 deep out of the same pre-snap look.
As you watch this video understand that you do not want to be a sitting duck. Sitting ducks do not fair well when the flag football quarterbacks are getting as good as they are. Throwing a little doubt in their mind by showing one defense and playing another can help level the flag football playing field.
