Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Coaches…The Eyes Of Texas Are Upon You
Full disclosure. Some of you who coach in the 49 other states not named Texas are likely to be peeved off when you read this blog. That’s why I am addressing you first. If you read this and are saying “Hey! Why not us?” I understand. Now back to the new Texas high school football coaches. By new, I mean that you are taking over a high school head coaching job in your first year coaching at that school.
In conjunction with Dave Campbell’s Texas Football we have offered all of you a free one year Full Team membership. Simply put, it is a helluva deal but I understand the importance of Texas football.
That’s why I did it.
I have learned a lot watching this over the past 8 months. The wheels of bureaucracy spin slow in Texas too. Texas High School Football coaches fight as many obstacles as football coaches in other states
One huge problem is that some of you have just been hired or your hire has not even been announced publicly yet. Can you imagine trying to be ready for the season with this scenario? I cannot.
You Are The Head Coach. You Coach In Texas. Everything Starts & Stops With You.
A second problem is that most of you are just getting your football coaching staff in the same building and/or neighborhood for the 2026 Texas high school football season.
I am not going to dismiss those two things because I get it. I coached a few years too. (30)
However; remember this. The number one culprit here lies squarely in your mirror. You are a head football coach and you are doing it in Texas. Some of you are new to it and some of you are coaches who have moved or were moved.
Whatever the case. You are not guaranteed success and you are not immune to failure. The same things you are preaching to your team about doing everything possible to compete apply to you as well.
In your mind, you may or may not have a better system. That’s your call. If you look at something and make the decision about can we can make your team better or not and say “No thanks”. I understand.
Regardless Of The Circumstances The Buck Stops With The Head Coach
However; to not look at this is the same thing as jumping offsides on 3rd & 1 because you are not detailed with your preparation. That is wrong.
The good news is it is late but it’s still June. Here at FirstDown PlayBook we are football coaches. We are not taking the summer off. It’s not too late to fix this.
